Best gaming PC for Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best-looking games on PC. It is also one of the hardest for a PC to run. Here is what it takes, explained simply, so you buy the right PC the first time.

What Cyberpunk 2077 needs

Cyberpunk is a very demanding game. The busy city, the lights and the reflections all give the PC a lot of work to do.

  • A strong graphics card. This is the part that draws everything you see. For Cyberpunk it matters more than anything else in the PC.
  • 16GB of memory (RAM) or more. This is the PC's short-term workspace. 16GB is a sensible amount for gaming today.
  • An SSD. This is fast storage. The game is big, and an SSD loads it much more quickly than an old hard drive.
  • A good processor. The city is full of people and cars, and the processor keeps track of them all.

Ray tracing, in plain words

Ray tracing draws light the way it works in real life. Neon signs reflect in puddles, and shadows fall where they should. It looks stunning. But it is very hard work for the graphics card. You can switch it off in the settings, and the game still looks good.

Upscaling: DLSS and FSR

Upscaling is a clever trick. The game draws a smaller picture, then sharpens it up to fit your screen. The result looks close to the full picture, but the game runs more smoothly.

  • DLSS is NVIDIA's upscaling. It needs an NVIDIA RTX graphics card.
  • FSR is AMD's upscaling. It works on AMD cards and on many others too.

For Cyberpunk, upscaling is very useful, especially with ray tracing on. See graphics cards explained for what RTX and the other letters mean.

Going further: high settings, ray tracing or 1440p

If you want ray tracing switched on, high settings, or a sharper 1440p screen, you need one of the strongest graphics cards. This is the game where spending more on the graphics card shows the most.

A strong PC for Cyberpunk will also play almost any other game well. So it is a good choice if you want one PC that copes with everything.

Which screen?

A sharper screen makes the graphics card work harder. For Cyberpunk, a 1080p screen is the easiest to run. A 1440p screen looks sharper, but needs one of the stronger PCs above. 4K is for the very top PCs only.

Questions people ask

Is Cyberpunk 2077 hard for a PC to run?

Yes. It is one of the most demanding games you can buy. It needs a strong graphics card, and even more so with ray tracing switched on or on a sharp screen.

What is ray tracing in Cyberpunk?

Ray tracing is a way of drawing light, shadows and reflections so they look real. Night City looks amazing with it, but it asks a lot from the graphics card. You can switch it off to make the game run more smoothly.

What are DLSS and FSR?

They are upscaling. The game draws a smaller picture, then sharpens it to fit your screen. This makes the game run more smoothly and still look good. DLSS is from NVIDIA and needs an RTX card. FSR is from AMD and works on many cards.

Can I play Cyberpunk on a cheaper gaming PC?

Often, yes, at lower settings and with upscaling switched on. It will not look as good as on a strong PC. If Cyberpunk is the main game you want, it is worth putting more of your budget into the graphics card.
