Best gaming PC for Fortnite

Fortnite is played by everyone from young children to serious competitive players. It runs on a wide range of PCs, but how good it looks and how smooth it feels depends mostly on the graphics card.

What Fortnite needs

Fortnite is light to medium in how much it asks of a PC. It is made to run on many different machines, so you do not need a top-end PC to enjoy it.

  • Graphics card: the part that draws the picture. Built-in graphics (graphics inside the processor, with no separate card) can play it at low settings. A budget to mid-range graphics card plays it well at 1080p.
  • Processor: a modern six-core processor is plenty. It matters more if you want very high frame rates.
  • Memory (RAM): 16GB is the sensible amount. See how much RAM you need.
  • Storage: an SSD, so the game loads quickly and updates install fast.

Going further: high settings, high frame rates and 1440p

Fortnite's highest settings add more detailed lighting, shadows and effects. These look great but need a stronger graphics card.

Competitive players often do the opposite. They turn some settings down to get a higher frame rate. Frame rate (FPS) is how many pictures the PC draws each second. More pictures means smoother movement, which helps you aim. Read frame rate and refresh rate explained to see why.

A 1440p screen (sharper than normal 1080p) also needs a stronger graphics card. So does streaming or recording your games while you play.

Which screen?

Most Fortnite players are happy with a 24 inch 1080p screen. If you want smoother play, choose a high-refresh screen, which can show more pictures each second. If you want a sharper picture, look at 1440p. Read 1080p, 1440p or 4K and what size monitor is best for gaming.

Questions people ask

Can Fortnite run without a graphics card?

Yes, at low settings. Many processors have graphics built in, and that is enough for Fortnite at 1080p with the settings turned down. A separate graphics card makes it look better and stay smooth in busy fights.

How much RAM do I need for Fortnite?

16GB is the sensible amount. It leaves room for Fortnite, Windows and things like a voice chat app all at once. 8GB is now too little for a gaming PC.

Do I need an SSD for Fortnite?

Yes, we would always fit one. An SSD is a fast storage drive. It makes the game load quicker, and Fortnite has regular updates that are quicker to install on an SSD.

Is Fortnite good for streaming?

Fortnite is very popular to stream. Streaming and recording ask more of the PC, so if you plan to do it, choose a stronger graphics card and processor than you need just to play.
